Social networking was a good concept originally but seems to have been trampled by businesses just after link juice its a shame as its an ideal way to meet people with common interests. Like most of these things there's never a defining moment where everything changes, rather a few authority sites taking the lead on innovation. Some of the concepts mentioned will take a while to develop fully like the open ID as trust remains an issue but sure as eggs are eggs they'll be here. Generally speaking, get involved early but think carefully about leading. This can end up being expensive and risky if people don't choose to follow. Sit tight for a few months and see how things pan out. Interesting article.
