Every once in a while something happens in e-commerce land that signals a change in how you are going to shop forever. In the past there’s been huge moments like when an Internet retailer became the biggest retailer in its given niche.

Traditional retailers didn’t believe an online shop could ever sell more books than they did.  It couldn’t happen. But then Amazon came along and did it leaving Waterstones and Barnes and Noble wondering what they did wrong.

Last week something just as ground breaking happened and its destined to change how you get your groceries every week.

Ocado who provide a home delivery service for Waitrose started to offer not only free home delivery but also undercut them on price.

So, to get this straight…. Its cheaper for me to sit and home and get my shopping delivered to my door than it is to go out and spend two hours out there shopping for it?

If you follow this developments logical path:

  • Retailers are spending big money on prime location supermarkets
  • Retailers spend big money on staffing

Turns to

  • Retailers buy cheap warehouses
  • Retailers sell expensive prime location properties
  • Staffing levels drop massively.

Whats not unusual is that its cheaper to buy some things online. What is unusual is that some of the countries biggest retailers have made a conscious decision to prefer online despite having a massive established retail base.

Is this the future of how I get my beans delivered?
